"National Eye Institute's AREDS Study Finds High Levels of Antioxidants and Zinc Reduce Risk of Advanced Macular Degeneration and Vision Loss"

Dear Friend,

Few people are aware that macular degeneration is an incurable eye disease and that it is the leading cause of blindness for those aged 55 and older in the United States, affecting more than 10 million Americans.

According to a recent poll, Americans dread blindness more than any other disability. Recent studies indicate that by the year 2025, the population of people over the age of 65 in the United States will be six times higher than in 1990.

The reason - "baby boomers" are aging and overall life expectancy is increasing. Since many people diagnosed with macular degeneration are over age 55, the number of cases of macular degeneration in the U.S. will increase significantly as baby boomers age.

In January 1997, Dr. Carl Kupfer, then the Director of the National Eye Institute, National Institutes of Health, stated publicly that macular degeneration will soon take on aspects of an epidemic!

If you are concerned about age related macular degeneration either because you already have it OR you want to do everything you can to protect your eyes...
then this is the most important letter you'll ever read!

Here's why:

The National Eye Institute has reported that currently there is only one established method that may slow the progression of dry age related macular degeneration (AMD) from intermediate to advanced AMD (source: National Institute of Health Website.)

ONLY one!

AMD is the leading cause of legal blindness in people over the age of 55.  There is no known macular degeneration cure nor is there any known way to reverse macular degeneration.

This is a frightening time for many baby boomers and seniors who do not wish to lose their vision as they age.

If you're reading this you may be one of the millions of patients who have heard these frightening words from your eye doctor,
"you have macular degeneration."

Or perhaps you are looking for the best solution to help maintain healthy eyes with the hopes you NEVER hear those words from your physician.  As of today, there is no cure for macular degeneration, no way to prevent macular degeneration, and no way to reverse macular degeneration.

Either way, if you are like millions of others who are concerned about macular degeneration because you want to slow your intermediate macular degeneration from advancing or because you want to take every precaution to maintain healthy eyes then you need to read every word on this website.

Macular Degeneration is a horrifying medical condition. If you're already suffering from macular degeneration, believe me I know how you feel.

Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of legal blindness in the United States for individuals over the age of 55, and the number of cases is growing dramatically with the aging of the baby boomers.

Perhaps like you, I am a baby boomer. I was born in 1948, and I have family members, friends, and many patients who have learned that they have macular degeneration.

What is Macular Degeneration?

More specifically this disease is called Age Related Macular degeneration (AMD). It is a disorder resulting in slow and progressive damage to an area of the eye called the macula.

There is a macula in each eye and the macula is part of the retina. This area is the most sensitive vision processing center in the eye.

The retina is the portion of the eye that sends light to the brain. The macula allows for very fine and clear vision.

prevent macular degeneration

The disease can occur in one eye or both; however, if it develops in one eye,
there is a higher risk that it will develop in the other eye as well.

Understanding that the disease is one that is progressive is very important. Once you have been diagnosed with dry macular degeneration the National Eye Institute reports that high doses of zinc and antioxidants may help slow the disease from intermediate to advanced stages.

I'll get back to this in a moment, but first it's important to understand more about AMD.

There are two types of AMD. There is the wet form and the dry form.

The wet form consists of only about 5% - 10% of AMD cases and usually presents with some distortion of vision and lines might look wavy instead of straight.

It is caused by the formation of new blood vessels under the macula that leak; thus the wet form.

Some patients with wet AMD can lose significant vision in a very short period of time. All of the current medical therapies have been directed at the wet form of AMD, including injections.

Here is what a grid may look like when suffering from AMD.

What is Dry AMD?

The dry form is the most prevalent and is 90% - 95% of the AMD cases and is caused by the break down of the light sensitive cells in the macula. It is more slowly progressive.

The most common symptom of dry AMD is slightly blurred vision. You may have difficulty recognizing faces. You may need more light for reading and other tasks. Dry AMD generally affects both eyes, but vision can be lost in one eye while the other eye seems unaffected.

One of the most common early signs of dry AMD are drusen. Drusen are yellow deposits under the retina. They often are found in people over age 60. Your eye care professional can detect drusen during a comprehensive dilated eye exam.

Dry AMD has three stages:

Early AMD. People with early AMD have either several small drusen or a few medium-sized drusen. At this stage, there are no symptoms and no vision loss.

Intermediate AMD. People with intermediate AMD have either many medium-sized drusen or one or more large drusen. Some people see a blurred spot in the center of their vision. More light may be needed for reading and other tasks.

Advanced Dry AMD. In addition to drusen, people with advanced dry AMD have a breakdown of light-sensitive cells and supporting tissue in the central retinal area. This breakdown can cause a blurred spot in the center of your vision. Over time, the blurred spot may get bigger and darker, taking more of your central vision. You may have difficulty reading or recognizing faces until they are very close to you.

If you have vision loss from dry AMD in one eye only, you may not notice any changes in your overall vision. With the other eye seeing clearly, you still can drive, read, and see fine details. You may notice changes in your vision only if AMD affects both eyes. If blurriness occurs in your vision, see an eye care professional for a comprehensive dilated eye exam.

The National Eye Institute Reports That "High-Doses" of Antioxidants May Reduce Progression of Age Related Macular Degeneration...

According to the U.S. government's National Eye Institute, for those of us with the dry form, only nutritional supplementation is of any help.

The National Eye Institute (NEI) did a large study that showed very convincing evidence that certain antioxidants slow the progression of AMD, however, they did not conclude that this may prevent macular degeneration altogether.  There is no evidence that antioxidants or zinc act as a preventative to macular degeneration.

NEI director Paul A. Sieving, M.D., Ph.D. reports, "At present, the only established way to decrease the risk of vision loss in people with large drusen (early AMD) is to take daily supplements of vitamins and minerals as used in the NEI-supported Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS)."

Sieving continued. "This study found that high-dose antioxidant vitamins and minerals (vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, zinc, and copper), taken by mouth by people at risk of developing advanced AMD, reduced the risk of progression to advanced AMD by 25 percent and the risk of moderate vision loss by 19 percent."

These antioxidants can be found in foods that you eat every day.  They can also specifically be found in certain eye vitamin and nutritional supplements.

If you have been diagnosed with AMD, you have assuredly been told to take some type of eye vitamin to support healthy eyes.  It is important to find a nutritional supplement that contains the necessary antioxidants discovered in the AREDS study that showed hope for slowing the progression from intermediate to advanced macular degeneration.  Although there is no such thing as a "macular degeneration vitamin," there are supplements that contain the antioxidants from the National Eye Insititute's AREDS study.

The reason that nutritional items are of use is really quite easy to understand. Most of the essential ingredients are powerful antioxidants, which effectively were discovered during the AREDS study to slow the progression of macular degeneration.  It is important to understand that eye vitamins such as this are not a macular degeneration treatment nor are they a macular degeneration cure.  Only drugs approved by the FDA can have claims of treating macular degeneration or curing macular degeneration.  At this moment in time no FDA approved drug exists.

Antioxidants fight chemicals that are known to cause tissue breakdown or tissue injury. It is thought that people who have AMD have chemicals at work in the macula that are injuring these important cells slowly and insidiously.

"I found it on the Internet and started reading about it and decided I need to try this. I had been  diagnosed 5 years ago with macular degeneration and I had been to a specialist for cataracts.  I looked on the Internet and found this and thought that this sounds like something that would really help me.

I've been using it about 5 months.  I want to tell you that in between times I had gone to another specialist.  Six weeks after I started taking Preserve Mac Forte my  eyesight had changed tremendously.

When I went to the first doctor in May he told me my eyesight was 20/70 and 20/60. When I went to the next doctor 6 weeks later after taking Preserve Mac Forte my eyesight had gone back to 20/40 and 20/30. I was pleased.  That had been the prescription in my glasses the last two years so I continued taking Preserve Mac Forte.   I had been taking another vitamin but it wasn't doing what this did.

I believe the mixture of vitamins and minerals is what is helping my eyes.   I told two of my doctors already that I was taking this and they both wanted to know where they could get it.  They thought about prescribing this to other patients or at least telling them about it.

I've told people about this and they have noticed my eyes are not red anymore and they don't seem to get inflammation in them  like they were.  I have given samples out to people and they told me they thought they would try the vitamin because they thought it would help them.

I plan on using it for the rest of my life because I was having a lot of trouble driving in the daytime.  I don't have any glare, I don't have any problems driving in the daytime since I started this.

I haven't been back to my specialist yet, but I'm sure when I go back I think my eyes will have improved again because I'm seeing better all the time. I can read. I don't use my glasses to read.  I couldn't see to read fine lines before.  I think it really helps my eyes.

The other thing I like is the product is made here in the United States"

"I was having quite a bit of problems at night driving at the time and I went immediately on the Preserve Mac Forte and right after I started on it, I had an improvement in vision and have been on it ever since.  So that would be approximately 4 years and it has improved my vision considerably.

I had a break in the use of it for about a month and I started having a problem with one eye.  It was like there was a light in the left eye... like a center vision problem... just a small central vision problem there, but I got right back on it and everything straightened right back up.

There is quite a bit of difference because I was having to use my glasses and there was blurriness in my vision at that time, but now I can sit and watch television with no vision problem at all without my glasses.

All I know is that within a month's time I realized dramatic improvement in my vision and it has done nothing but help me from the moment I started taking it, and all I can say to anyone is to try it.  I would like to tell you that I appreciate how you have serviced this account.  You are excellent on servicing it."

How Do Supplements Help?

The largest completed studies to date on age related eye disease was conducted by the National Eye Institute.  These studies are called the AREDS study and the AREDS 2 study.  They concluded that high doses of zinc and antioxidants help slow the progression from intermediate to advanced macular degeneration.

AREDS 2 found that replacing beta-carotene from the original AREDS study with the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin was more beneficial in slowing age related macular degeneration.  Lutein and zeaxanthin are chemicals that protect the macula from damaging effects of blue light.

Important nutrients found in your eye begin depleting with age.  Supplements can help restore these levels and help protect the health of your eyes.

"The thing that first attracted me is the fact that the doctor who has made the vitamins to help me has [AMD], so I think someone is very understanding of something if they have it themselves.  I know I have gotten my medicine when I was supposed to the whole time and I've been thankful about taking it.

Everybody has been really, really nice to me. I couldn't say anything bad about this company at all.   It's not that expensive because the doctor that I talked to in Abington, VA about it said that you need to continue taking that because sometimes you get really expensive stuff and what you have is not that expensive so it is something that is affordable."
